C. 1920 ‘Arts & Crafts’ Cuenca Carpet
£ 9,500
Spanish carpets such as this one represent some of the most highly prized and time-honoured European weavings, tracing their lineage back to the period in which much of Spain was part of the Islamic world. Early pieces are widely sought after by collectors, and both 19th and 20th century examples make excellent decorative rugs.
This example, dating to the 1920s, boasts pleasant characteristics of Arts & Crafts design, with a large spacious pattern set atop a rare ivory ground with floral motifs creatively repeated across the field. The elegant drawing is rendered in a harmonious variety of fresh colours, all in natural vegetable-dyed wools; one of the loveliest examples of early 20th Century Spanish weaving that we have encountered, especially in this furnishing size.
Preserved in very good original condition for everyday use.
A charming piece with a timeless feel, that would compliment a wide variety of settings.
